IC-9700 Settings for CAT control with SatPC32

The IC-9700 allows CAT control via the (traditional) CI-V port ('Remote' port) and via its USB port.

1. CAT control via CI-V port:

You need an interface between the serial port of the PC and the radio for level conversion RS-232 <> TTL, e.g. the Icom CT-17 or a homebuild interface (the MAX232IF.jpg in the sub folder 'Icom' of the SatPC32 program folder shows an easy to built CT-17 compatible interface).

If the PC does not have a physical serial port like most laptops, you will also need a USB to serial converter.

A convenient solution is a socalled "CAT" cable (CT-17 cable). The cable is a combination of a USB to serial converter and an interface for level conversion. It connects the radio directly to a USB port on the PC.

IMPORTANT: Use only components with FTDI chipset.

Settings at the radio:
Press Menu > Set > Connectors > CI-V
On page 1/3 set
CI-V Baud Rate 19200, set same Baud Rate in SatPC32
CI-V Address A2h, set same address in SatPC32
CI-V Transceive OFF
USB-L.. and.. Remote Transceive Address 00h

On page 2/3 set
CI-V USB Port Unlink from [Remote]
CI-V USB Baud Rate 57600
CI-V-USB Echo Back OFF
CI-V DATA Baud Rate 9600

On page 3/3 set
CI-V DATA Echo Back OFF

2. CAT control via the USB port of the IC-9700

Connect the PC to the radio via an A/B USB cable.
The IC-9700 generates 2 COM ports when connected to the PC.
Open the Windows Device Manager and check the COM port numbers. Only one of the ports can be used for CAT control, try which one.

Settings at the radio:
Press Menu > Set > Connectors > CI-V
On page 1/3 set
CI-V Baud Rate 19200 (default)
CI-V Address A2h, set same address in SatPC32
CI-V Transceive OFF
USB-L.. and.. Remote Transceive Address 00h

On page 2/3 set
CI-V USB Port Unlink from [Remote]
CI-V USB Baud Rate 57600, set same Baud Rate in SatPC32.
CI-V-USB Echo Back ON
CI-V DATA Baud Rate 9600

On page 3/3 set
CI-V DATA Echo Back ON

3. Other Settings in SatPC32 menu 'Radio Setup'
Brand:            Icom
Model:           IC-9700   (select  the IC-9100 if your SatPC32 does not yet provide the IC-9700).
Baudrate:       see 1, 2 rsp. above
Icom address $A2, $A2
COM port number:
The port number the USB-to-Serial Adapters generate (see 1) or one of the port numbers generated  by the IC-9700 (see 2).
CAT delay     50

Check the option 'Satellite Mode', leave all other options of menu 'Radio Setup' unchecked.

Attention:
If the IC-9700 is controlled via its USB port, please note the following:
Always turn on the radio first before starting SatPC32.
The two COM ports of the IC-9700 will only be generated if the radio (at least the power supply) is switched on. SatPC32 checks at startup whether the COM ports selected in the 'Radio Setup' menu are available. If this is not the case, it sends a corresponding error message. If the message appears, it can be ignored if the program is to continue without CAT control. To enable CAT control, shut down SatPC32, turn on the device, then restart SatPC32.

Do not turn off the device (at least not the power supply) while SatPC32 is running. First stop SatPC32 before turning off the radio. If this is switched off first, the two serial ports go out, SatPC32 can no longer access the selected port and an error 'Access violation' occurs. The program intercepts this error by disabling the CAT control (C-). If this happens, you can either quit SatPC32 as usual or continue running without CAT control. To continue with the CAT control exit the program, turn on the radio and then restart SatPC32. If nevertheless the message appears that the selected port is not available, restart the program again or briefly pull the USB plug on the PC and connect it again.

Controlling the radio through the CI-V port (Remote Port) will not cause these problems because the power of the external USB-to-serial converter is provided by the PC.
